In our first appointment we'll first take care of the boring stuff (ethical talk and necessary paperwork). Don't worry, this will only take a few minutes. Then, once you get settled in I'll ask you to share your story (i.e. what brings you to meet with me).
At the end of the first appointment, I'll provide a high-level overview of what I'm hearing and how we might tackle your current life challenges together. Yes, "we" because therapy is a collaborative process. While I have the professional expertise to assist you in developing the skills and insights needed for your particular issue, you are the expert on you.
As a trained professional, I will use a variety of therapeutic approaches in my work with you. Each person is unique and so the approach used it also unique to you. There are no cookie cutter approaches!
Counselling Therapy could involve the use EMDR, CBT, DBT, solution-focused, strengths-based, narrative, attachment-based theory, and mindfulness practices in our work.
Most importantly, we will build a trusting and honest relationship with one another. You will be listened to and provided with a confidential and safe place where you can open up and be vulnerable while discussing your current challenges. I will ask you key questions to help you think on a deeper level, but only when I think you are ready to tackle things.
I know counselling therapy can seem scary, and it is the first time you go (I know from first hand experience). However, when you have the "right fit" with a therapist, the effects of counselling therapy are significant! In fact, research tells us that the therapeutic relationship you have with your therapist is more important than any other factor in counselling therapy.
